HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL VALUE
Luzhki. The remains of the synagogue.
The synagogue, dating from the middle of the 19th century, in the village of Luzhki, Vitebsk region, has been declared a building of historical and cultural value. This building is connected with the life of Eliezr Ben Jehuda (Leizer Izhak Perelman) – the father of modern Hebrew and a man who made an enormous contribution into the development of the Jewish and world culture. The synagogue is a one-storey building made of stone and brick on the bank of the river Mnut. The interior of the synagogue still retains fragments of plaster with wall ornaments. On the bank of the Mnut one can still find the ruins of the mikveh, also made of stone and brick. Until the 1930s the synagogue also had a heder, which Ben Jehuda used to attend. He was born in 1859 in Luzhki and studied there until 1872. According to the local residents, the synagogue was closed down in July 1941, when Luzhki was occupied by the German troops. After the war the synagogue was used as a shop, which closed down in the 1970s. The building of the mikveh was destroyed during the war. Ilya Razumovsky,
