THE MANEVICH FAMILY: BLACKSMITHS FROM SIROTINO

Being a historian, I have also done research of my own family roots. One of my family lines, the Manevich, originates from the place of Sirotino. I managed to find information about Mendel Gavriilovich Manevich (1875-1940) and his family.

Mendel’s family was rather religious and adhered to Hassidism. Mendel was a good blacksmith and owned a big house and a smithy. There were a few blacksmiths in Sirotino.

Mendel married Tsilia Moiseyevna, who originated from Beshenkovichi. Before every Sabbath she used to bake bread and made gefilte fish. They had children: son Zalman, daughter Eva, and younger children Yakov and Maria.

Mendel died in 1940 of a heart attack. He did not see the destruction of his town and the murder of his relatives. They say that the Nazis threw Tsilia, Yakov’s wife Yelizaveta and their three children into a well. Most probably that happened on November 18th, when the mass execution took place. Eva and her three children were also executed in the ghetto in Gorodok. Only Zalman and Maria were the ones who survived.

I will be glad to hear from anyone who knows anything about the Manevich family.
