HE WAS A KIND, CLEVER AND CHEERFUL PERSON

Naum Sherbakovsky.
Naum Sherbakovsky.

My father, Naum (Nahman) Sherbakovsky, was born on July 10th 1908 in Sirotino. There were three children in his family. He had to start working at the age of nine because his father died. In 1931 he met a nice girl, Rahil, who he married in 1933.

In July, 1941, we all left for Ufa. Our train was bombed on the way, so we had to take a barge down the Volga. Soon the barge was bombed as well and we continued our trip by train. In 1942 father volunteered to join the army and was sent to the frontline. He was seriously wounded in 1944, caught pneumonia and typhus. The situation was so bad that no one believed he would survive. They sent us a “killed in a battle” notice. I clearly remember that day, even though I was only five. Mother was sitting and crying, her tears falling on the piece of paper on her knees.

Father was saved by a young doctor. She was examining dead bodies and spotted that one of them was still breathing. She operated on him and took good care of him for several months.

So, several months later we received a letter from our father, where he related what had happened to him. Then one day I woke up to the sound of the voices on another room. I went out and saw my happy-looking parents. Father was really skinny. It was the beginning of 1945.

Father devoted a lot of his time to his work but he never forgot about the family. He was a truly decent man, an excellent father and husband. He had a hard life and saw the death of his son, who did not live to be 40. He was born on January 23rd 1993 and was buried in Vitebsk at the Jewish cemetery. We will always remember him.
