My grandfather Morduh Shulman was born in the second half of the 19th century. He had three brothers: Ora, Leib and Savely. Later they moved to the place called Yanovichi in Vitebsk region,

Morduh and his wife Leya had seven children (six sons and a daughter). The family was very poor.

Everything changed when their son Leib married Luba Pronova. Her family was rather well off. Luba was very good at sewing. So she spent her days sewing clothes for the whole family.

Luba and Leib had two daughters: Rosa and Esfir. In 1925 the family moved to Vitebsk.

By that time Morduh had become widowed. His sons Ruvim and Isor remained in Yanovichi with him.

When Germans were approaching Vitebsk in 1941, brothers Ruvim and Isor decided to flee. Isor’s horse was too weak, so he had to come back home. He said: “The Germans are a cultured nation and they will not do us any harm”.

Fascists murdered all the Jews in Yanovichi. Isor was killed together with his wife and their two children.

Ruvim and his family evacuated themselves and lived in Vitebsk after the war.

Peisah Shulman (Morduh’s son) left for Moscow in 1926. He volunteered to join the Army during the war and participated in the liberation of Smolensk, Belarus and Lithuania.

Savely Shulman (Morduh’s brother) also lived in Yanovichi. He married Bella, a Jewish woman from Poland. They had six sons and two daughters. Their descendants are now living in Israel.
