Galina Zundelevich’s memories

My maiden name is Yahnina. I was born in 1929 in Leningrad. My parents were Israel Davidovich Yahnin (born in 1903) and Mira Ruvimovna Masarskaya (born in 1908). My grandfather (on father’s line), David Yahnin, lived in Yanovichi until 1941. He was a rabbi.

Grandfather David several times came to Leningrad before the war. He was killed in 1941 during a German bombing in Yanovichi.

The population of Yanovichi was predominantly Jewish. This is where most of my mother’s relatives lived. According to my mother’s stories, 47 people from her family were murdered by fascists. All of my father’s relatives were murdered as well.

Today there are a lot of anti-Semites that deny the Holocaust. However, many people that went through that horror are still alive. We are now living in Israel and often talk to the native Israelis about what really happened in that war.

Let the greatest tragedy of the 20th century never happen again.
