Arkady ShulmanTHE KEEPER OF FAMILY MEMORIESMaya Markovna Alesker is the youngest in the family of the Aleskers. She is soon turning 70. She was born in 1941 in Vitebsk. "That year was horrible for everyone. However, the date of my birth is May 9. At that time nobody knew that this date will be a special one for the whole world." The Aleskers and the Kozlianskys are Vitebsk residents in many generations.
Senior grade of the first experimental school of the Jewish pedagogical college, June, 1927.
The Aleskers.
Maya Markovna's mother, Rahil Haimovna Kozlianskaya, was born in Vitebsk in 1909. She studied at the Jewish pedagogical college.
Morduh Mendelevich Alesker.
Rahil Haimovna was from a family with a lot of children. "My grandmother was born in 1879 and grandfather – in 1870. Grandfather, Haim Ioselevich, was illiterate, but he was called "an illiterate engineer". He was a construction worker and participated in the construction of the veterinary academy in Vitebsk.." The people, who managed to evacuate their families from Vitebsk during the first weeks of the war, moved east and survived. Those, who stayed in Vitebsk, were murdered… Maya Markovna's grandparents, the Aleskers (father's line) stayed in Vitebsk. They both were killed. Father Morduh Mendelevich was 30 in 1941. He and his brother were mobilized on the first days of the war. Rahil Haimovna did not receive a single letter from him. She made numerous inquiries but the answer was always the same: he is missing. He probably was killed on the first days of the war, when chaos and panic were everywhere. His brother survived and returned home after the war. All of his brothers and sisters survived as well. |
