THE OLD CEMETERY IN SUKHARI

The village of Sukhari is located 20 km away from Mogilev.

Jews settled down here approximately in the 16th-17th centuries. At the beginning of the 20th century Sukhary was split into 2 parts: a Jewish and a Belarusian one.

In the autumn of 1941 Germans killed the Jewish men and teenagers from Sukhari. On February 23, 1942, eighty-four more people were killed near Sukhari, from them 34 women and 14 children.

In the Soviet times a memorial was erected on the grave. After the war there was no Jewish population left in Sukhari. Sukhari has an old Jewish cemetery.

Akiva, son of Yakov Sapir and Ester, daughter of Elizer.

On the left – Akiva, son of Yakov Sapir, Shebat 4, 5642 (1882)
On the right – Ester, daughter of Elizer, 5640 (1880).

Several Jewish organizations from Mogilev decided to clean up the cemetery – we cleaned the territory, and made photographs of the matseivas in order to make a catalogue of the cemetery.

We have also translated the names on some of the tombstones. You can see the photos of the matseivas with the names. Perhaps, some people will be interested and share their memories about the life of this Jewish settlement.

Coordinator of community programs of Mogilev Jewish Community.
