JEWS FROM FORMER PROPOISK, NOW SLAVGOROD

Before 1945 the town of Slavgorod bore the name of Propoisk. Historically, the majority of the population in Propoisk was Jewish.

The town used to have a bazaar. Twice a year fairs were organized. The bazaar worked on Sundays.

The town had a Jewish school and a synagogue.

Then the war broke out.

My father was mobilized. My mother brought us to say good bye to him. I was only 8 months old. Father kissed me and left forever.

Mother decided we should evacuate. We, together with another family from our town, were determined to reach Klintsy. On the way there that family stole all of our belongings. We kept walking. Sometimes we were given a ride on horses or trains. On the way we came across some nice and kind people.

My father's parents told my mother that they would stay in their house. Their words were: "We haven't done anyone any harm. Why would anyone want to kill us?" They were mistaken.

Germans arrived in Propoisk as if they were the authority. The local residents were not considered human. They were tortured, their houses burned.

In October, 1941 the local Jews were taken to the village of Kurganovka and murdered. Today there is a memorial on the mass grave.

Propoisk was liberated on November 25, 1943. Today there are only three Jewish families living here. Ita Moiseyevna Krok with her family, Sofia Yakovlevna Genkina (her children are living in Russia, the Ukraine and Belarusian towns) and Bronislava Isakovna Baiver, the author of these lines (living alone).
