Yury BestvitskyTHE CRUEL IMAGE OF THE WARGalina Shulga has not forgotten the details of the fascist occupation of her native Byhov. - I was five, when Nazi planes invaded Byhov. I remember the first day of the war in our town as if it happened yesterday. Two houses that stood next to our house were destroyed at once. Georgy Moiseyevich Shapiro tried to evacuate one of the local factories but he was murdered by Germans. He was professor Shapiro’s son. I can even remember what he was dressed like: dark-blue trousers, polished boots, a brown pullover and a white shirt. Naturally, he was wearing glasses and had curly hair, which was the reason for the murder. He was taken to a house where Varvara Ilyina lived – she was considered a little insane. The Nazis paid no attention to her. Later she ran into our house and cried out: “The Germans have killed Shapiro – he is lying in my house.” He was asked whether he was a communist. He replied he was an engineer. When he was asked whether he was Jewish, he answered positively. Then the Nazis said he could go and the moment he approached the door they shot him on the head. At night my mother and several other women wrapped him into a blanket and buried at the local Russian cemetery. Mother also told me that Germans had appointed someone named Valovik the head of the city. He came to Shapiro’s wife one night and told her to escape with her son Volodia, because at 4 a.m. Nazis would come after them. She followed his advice and left. They survived only owing to that man. At the end of the 50s I went to Minsk and stayed at their house. Newspaper “Berega”,
