BYHOV SYNAGOGUE

The synagogues of big Jewish communities in Belarus, or so-called main synagogues, were mostly made of stone. The earliest stone synagogues date back from the 16th century. Some synagogues, including the one in Byhov, have features of defense-style architecture. This synagogue dates back from the 17th century.

The shape of the synagogue resembles a fortress – with towers and gunslots. The building was actively used for town defense in the middle of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century.

Despite the severe outside look the synagogue was truly impressive inside – with rich interior and wall painting.

Byhov synagogue was located in the northern part of Old Byhov, in a separate block, relatively close to the trade square and the city wall. The Jewish community of Byhov was constantly growing from the 18th to the end of the 19th century. In 1880 there were eleven synagogues in Byhov. All of them, except for the abovementioned one, were wooden.
